Prime Minister (PM) of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim dismissed rumors of plots to overthrow his government. He expressed confidence that his unity government would remain intact until the next general election.
“I am very confident that the unity government will stay until the next general election,” Anwar was quoted as saying by local media Free Malaysia Today (FMT) after an event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Friday (5/5).
Anwar was asked by journalists about recent rumors claiming that there is enough support from MPs backing Opposition Leader Hamzah Zainudin as the next prime minister.
Reported Named and The StarSaturday (6/5/2023), regarding this matter, Anwar also emphasized that his potential challengers must submit a vote of no confidence in parliament if they have sufficient support to do so.
Local media had previously reported widespread speculation of a plot to overthrow him Anwar government.
News portal The Vibes on April 24 alleged there was a plot to remove Anwar from his position through a by-election among the Barisan Nasional (BN) lawmakers who did not support him.
According to the report, several BN lawmakers were courted and persuaded to quit their party and give up their seats. The MPs were then reported to be seeking re-election under the banner of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) opposition.
Earlier on Monday, Anwar said that the parties in his unity government were strong enough to defend against any plot to overthrow the government.
