ANVR: consider calling in the army for security at Schiphol

“Perhaps we should then call in people from the army to ensure that security is in order. To get through this period,” says Oostdam.

The Ministry of Defense has announced that it will only take action if the security region asks for it. Such a request has not been made, a spokesperson says, and if it does come, “the chance will not be very great that the Defense will grant this request.”

In recent days, it was again hit at Schiphol: due to staff shortages, travelers had to wait hours before they could check in. This time it was the result of a lack of security guards.

The hours-long waiting times at Schiphol cause anger and sometimes even aggression among passengers. It erupted on Sunday evening, nearly leading to a fight among passengers and security personnel. The situation was also bad yesterday, travelers tell RTL Nieuws.

Shameful display

Oostdam calls the long lines at Schiphol Airport ‘shameful’ today. “This has never been seen before. It is an embarrassing display and it is dramatic for Schiphol’s image.”

He assumes that the problems at Schiphol will continue for a long time to come. “Schiphol has not solved the problems this coming weekend. I don’t expect the coming weeks either. I think we will have rows in the coming weeks until the summer holidays.”

According to Oostdam, travelers who have yet to book should better move to regional airports.
