Ekkelenkamp and Kerk play a negative role in another defeat in Antwerp

Royal Antwerp is in danger of an inglorious retreat in the Champions League. Coach Mark van Bommel’s team was winless for this round and that did not change on Tuesday evening. FC Porto proved too strong for the Great Old with 2-0. Evanilson, good for a hat trick in Antwerp, opened the scoring. After the break, Jurgen Ekkelenkamp was immediately sent off and veteran Pepe decided the game with a header. Porto, like FC Barcelona, has nine points, although Shakhtar also has a chance of qualification with six points. For Antwerp, the European season seems to be over in two games.
Particularities:
Antwerp, with Ekkelenkamp, Owen Wijndal and Gyrano Kerk in the starting line-up and Vincent Janssen on the bench, held out well for a long time in the first half. The Portuguese proved to be more dangerous, although Mehdi Taremi, who headed at goalie Senne Lammens, lacked sharpness. Pepê, not to be confused with the defender, saw Lammens make another good save moments later. Yet Porto got what it was looking for and it could thank Kerk for that. The attacker committed a clumsy foul on Stephen Eustaquio, after which Evanilson Lammens sent it to the wrong corner from eleven meters: 1-0.
Five minutes after the break, Antwerp’s problems increased. Ekkelenkamp made a tackle with a high leg on Zaidu and was shown a direct red card after a VAR check. Antwerp was nowhere to be seen for a long time, until Arbnor Muja missed a great opportunity in injury time. On the other hand, Pepe decided the game in injury time, by nodding in at the far post: 2-0.
