Antwerp Council Allows Companies to Use Mobile Charging Stations for Electric Cars in Public Areas

The council of Antwerp wants companies to be allowed to use mobile charging stations to charge electric cars on the public domain. In this way, the council wants to prevent ‘a proliferation of charging stations’. Start-up UZE wants to offer mobile charging stations in the city later this year.

Door the college decision providers are allowed to charge cars if they are parked on the street, for example. It was already possible to charge cars on private property with a mobile charging station. The municipal council still has to approve the council decision. The council wants the measure to come into effect on April 1. “What we would rather not see is a proliferation of charging stations, and that is why we embrace this new way of charging,” says Koen Kennis, Alderman for Mobility at the Antwerp Municipal Council.

The Antwerp start-up UZE says to VRT want to apply the new policy later this year. UZE uses electric carts with batteries to charge cars. DC charging is used for this. Last May, the company announced that it wanted to charge electric shared cars with this. Later this year, the company wants to expand to private individuals, with a test phase of hundreds of people. In the autumn, the company hopes to expand the charging option to everyone in Antwerp.

The idea is that private individuals park their car in, for example, a parking lot and order a mobile charging station with the UZE app. The UZE charging station then goes to the car and charges it. A 40-minute charging session would cost approximately 30 euros, although it is not clear how many kWh are involved. UZE says it is more expensive than fast charging along the highway.
