Today, on World Diabetes Day, the city of Antwerp is giving its fight against diabetes an extra boost. By highlighting the town hall in blue from 5 p.m. to midnight, the city literally puts the fight against this chronic condition in the spotlight. “A healthy lifestyle can make a world of difference.”
Diabetes, also known as diabetic diabetes, poses a significant and growing health challenge. Type 2 diabetes in particular, often related to an unhealthy lifestyle, is a problem worldwide. In Belgium, 1 in 10 citizens suffer from diabetes, and remarkably, 1 in 3 people do not even know that they suffer from this condition.
This year, the city of Antwerp is once again supporting HALT2Diabetes. Through this project of the Diabetes League and with the support of the Flemish government, people with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes are identified and guided towards a healthy lifestyle.
Healthy lifestyle
Various information sessions will take place in November. During these information sessions, participants complete a questionnaire to estimate their risk of diabetes. So far, 232 people have participated, of which 93 people had an increased risk of diabetes without already having health problems.
Alderman for Health Els van Doesburg (N-VA) emphasizes the importance of a healthy lifestyle: “By making healthier choices, we can significantly reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. That’s why as a city we remain committed to promoting a healthy lifestyle and preventing diabetes. Making healthy food choices, regular exercise, quitting smoking and moderate alcohol consumption can make a significant difference to both health and quality of life in the long term.”
