Supervisor Antti J. Jokinen guide Kaleva: Kullervo’s story -film, about which there is a long interview with Jokinen on the respected website Variety.
This is Jokinen’s first directing job Omerta 6/12 after. Jokinen left directing Omerta due to exhaustion in 2021.
– Regarding Omerta, I tried to make two films and a five-episode series and it exhausted me, Jokinen tells Variety.
– I’ve had health problems, and I was thinking of making a smaller film next. But I wanted to tell this story, says Jokinen, referring to the Kalevala.
According to Jokinen, there is not so much violence in the Kalevala directed by him.
– These characters are not one-dimensional, these are men who feel. They don’t just rape and rob.
However, there are fight scenes in the film.
– The swords are heavy, and the Actors have been training for a year. But it is interesting to show the effect of violence on people.
The purpose is to make more Kalevala films.
Jokinen says in an interview that his career in Hollywood did not go completely as planned.
In 2011, he directed a horror film The Residentwhich he starred in Hillary Swank. The film was poorly received.
– I had big Hollywood dreams, but to make an American film from Finland… it would fail. I still get horror movie offers from Hollywood, for example The Resident was a disappointment to me. It was tested and several people joined it. In the end, I didn’t know what the movie was about anymore, Some times.
The filming of the Kalevala movie has already started. Among others, the main characters of the film will be seen Elias Salonen, Eero Aho, Ilkka Koivula, Janne Hyytiäinen and I am Airola.
