António Simões steps down as CEO of Santander Spain – Banking & Finance

António Simões will step down as CEO of Santander Spain, the bank announced this Friday, underlining that the role will now be filled by Ángel Rivera. The changes take effect on February 1 of the following year, details the company in a press release.

Despite stepping down as CEO, the Portuguese banker will remain at the forefront of the Spanish bank’s European operations.

“The appointment of Ángel Rivera will support continued growth in Spain and help accelerate commercial plans in these markets,” underlines the institution.

In a post on the LinkedIn social network, António Simões said he was “convinced that this change will help continue to boost the bank’s growth”, both in Spain and in Europe.

The Portuguese moved to Santander Spain in 2020 to manage the bank’s business in Europe, after 13 years not HSBC, I have assumed the role of CEO in April 2021.

In addition to the change in the CEO position, Santander’s board also approved the appointment of Mahesh Aditya as the new head of revenue management, effective March 2023.
