Moscow –
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia would send nuclear-powered ballistic or cruise missiles to Belarus to anticipate tensions with the West. The missile system is called the Iskander-M.
As reported by AFP on Sunday (26/6/2022), Putin made this statement on Saturday (25/6) local time when he received the Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko. He said the deliveries would be made in the coming months.
“In the coming months, we will transfer the Iskander-M tactical missile system to Belarus, which can use ballistic missiles or cruise missiles, in its conventional and nuclear versions,” Putin said in a broadcast on Russian television at the start of his meeting with Lukashenko. in Saint Petersburg.
Later, he also offered to upgrade Belarusian warplanes to be capable of carrying nuclear weapons. This was done after rising tensions with Western countries over Ukraine.
“Many Su-25s (planes) are in service with the Belarusian military. They can be upgraded in an appropriate way,” the Russian leader said.
“This modernization should be carried out in aircraft factories in Russia and personnel training should begin according to this,” he added, after Lukashenko asked him to ‘customize’ the plane. We will agree on how to achieve this,” Putin continued.
To be known, Putin has made several references to nuclear weapons since his country launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24, which the West sees as a warning to the West not to intervene.
Lukashenko said last month that his country had purchased the nuclear-capable Iskander missile and S-400 anti-aircraft missile system from Russia.
