Antibodies against covid in childbirth

March 21, 2021

For a few days, the Mexican press has reported a case in San Luis Potosí of a woman who gave birth having been vaccinated, during pregnancy, against the covid-19 disease.

It is very relevant to comment on the case because Mexico has not decided on clear actions for vaccination under these conditions. An article in El País reports on the statements of Undersecretary Hugo López-Gatell, who manifests himself with caution on the subject and, of course, is right, but given the panorama of maternal deaths that we are seeing in Mexico, discussion is urgent.

Repeatedly, in this space, I have commented on the need to provide the units that apply the vaccine with some doses specifically intended for women who decide to get vaccinated while pregnant.

I have also commented on the fact that some of the pharmaceutical companies have initiated phase III protocols to demonstrate the safety of the biological, with the enormous disadvantage of being against placebo, that is, half of the women who decide to be vaccinated will be left without protection by participating in the study.

I also presented a brief account of what has happened with various vaccines in pregnancy, which raises the strong suspicion that they will not harm the woman or the fetus.

In the case at hand, it is about a female health professional who, knowing the panorama of vaccines, and the fundamental fact that none of those designed to prevent covid-19 contain live viruses, decided to get vaccinated and, fortunately, found colleagues obstetrician gynecologists with the capacity for reflection and access to the vaccine, in such a way that they applied it, of course through a very clear informed consent.

During delivery, samples of both maternal blood and the umbilical cord were taken (which does not represent a risk for the newborn), thus verifying the presence of antibodies against the disease in both the mother and the newborn, which probably passed through of the placenta, so they may not protect you for a long time, but the conclusions are clear and obvious.

The mother did not present any complications and the baby was born with protective antibodies. There is no basis to think that the result would be different, in fact, there are several vaccines that are applied in pregnancy with the aim of protecting the newborn.

It is so clear that several health agencies in developed countries are advising that the vaccine should be offered to pregnant women, of course with a broad explanation, but in the case of health workers or women suffering from diseases that mean a high risk of complications from the disease. infection, it is reasonable to vaccinate them if they decide to.

There is no ethical objection, and in my case, I am discussing the issue with the pregnant women under my care, hoping that, if any of them decide to apply the biological, we can find a way to apply it in Mexico without traveling to the United States, such as many people in this country are doing it. I insist, once again, that we must take up the discussion in this regard as a country.
