Organizations such as the WHO have been warning for a long time about the threat posed by antibiotic resistance that some bacteria develop.
–
We are talking about a serious phenomenon because it can make the diseases that we have so far fully controlled become progressively more and more difficult to treat.
In fact, this is already the case for some diseases for which complications are becoming more common, writes 20min.es. Below are the infections that develop the most severe antibiotic resistance:
1. Tuberculosis
A name that in the West seems typical of the past, but which has never left developing countries. Now, the bacterium that causes it, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is becoming resistant to the two strongest drugs that existed against it, complicating treatment and increasing the threat of outbreaks.
2. Clostridium difficile
Clostridium difficile is a bacterium (germ) that can cause an infection in the gut and can lead to diarrhea. The infection can occur in hospital patients and usually occurs in patients who have recently received antibiotic therapy. This is because antibiotics change the normal bacteria in the intestines allowing the clostridium difficile bacterium to multiply and cause diarrhea.
3. Enterococi
VREs are bacteria that are commonly found in human intestines. Sometimes enterococci can cause urinary tract infections, wounds and blood. Generally, we treat these infections with an antibiotic called vancomycin. Sometimes enterococci become resistant to this antibiotic, in other words, vancomycin no longer works against them. We call these enterococci resistant to vancomycin or VRE.
4. Staphylococcus aureus
Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogenic bacterium of the genus Staphylococcus, which can cause suppurative infections or sepsis in humans and animals. The manifestations of these infections are varied: impetigo, pyoderma, staphyloderma, staphylococcal pneumonia, SSS syndrome. It is a typical infection in hospitals, but it could be treated without major problems with methicillin. However, currently some strains do not respond to treatment and can cause serious health problems.
5. Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infectious disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria Gonorrhoeae and is a serious health problem. If it is detected and treated early, the disease is not serious. The problem is that the indicated treatments are becoming significantly less effective against it, which has led agencies such as the American Centers for Disease Control to update their guidelines on Gonorrhea.
6. Enterobacteriaceae
Enterobacteriaceae is a family of bacteria comprising 28 genera, of which 23 are involved in human pathology. It includes many very common bacteria, such as the genus Klebsiella or Escherichia coli (E. coli). They mainly affect people with weakened immune systems, and some of their infections become resistant to their typical antibiotics (carbapenems) and most available antibiotics. In some cases, the diseases they cause can be fatal.
