Anti-Taliban forces reportedly took back control of the Banu, Pol-e-Hesar and De Salah districts of Baghlan province, while about 60 Taliban fighters were killed or wounded in the fighting.
The Taliban are advancing rapidly across the country ahead of the August 31 deadline for the US troop withdrawal. The chaotic scene at Kabul’s airport following the entry of the Taliban into the city sparked significant criticism of the handling of the situation by US President Joe Biden’s administration.
However, local forces on the ground appear to be resisting the Taliban.
Photos and videos have been circulating on social media on Friday (20/8/2021) along with reports of real clashes between the Taliban and local insurgents.

A Twitter account named after the country’s Panjshir Province – which is a hotbed of insurgency against the Taliban – shared reports on events in the neighboring province of Baghlan on Friday in Persian and English.
“Pul-e-Hesar district was taken back from the #Taliban and fighting rages on in Deh-e-Salah and Banu districts,” the post reads.
“Local sources say the Taliban have been attacked from several areas and suffered heavy casualties,” they said Newsweek.
