Invited by the SAEL (Archaeological Society of Eure-et-Loir), Juliette Clément, speaker, proposed, last Friday in Chartres, a focus on anti-Semitism in Eure-et-Loir during the Second World War.
“The objective of Nazi Germany is to identify, make visible, despoil and transport a population to a place of death. This ideological and economic program, from 1940 to 1944, affected Eure-et-Loir like all of occupied France. The elimination of the Jews is carried out with the participation of the Vichy government. »
The speaker recalls that the goal is to make 11 million Jews disappear. “For the Germans, there are two ways to die: immediate killing and delayed killing after a period of work. In the latter case, death is expected after three weeks after a period of slavery and voluntarily rationed food. It should be noted that the needs of the companies in which these suspended dead worked having seen their labor needs increase, this lifespan was lengthened. This is how Simone Veil and Primo Levi escaped extermination. »
Juliette Clément continues: “In France, the Government of Pétain, by constitutional acts (acts and not laws because not voted by the Assembly) sent to death more than 75,000 people. In Eure-et-Loir, 107 Jews (41 in Chartres, 33 in Châteaudun and 33 in Dreux) were counted. »
She mentioned the case of various deported Jewish Eurelians, merchants and doctors. Like Doctor Michel Goldenberg “of Romanian origin who had settled in Fontaine-la-Guyon in 1930. He was registered as a Jew in October 1940. On June 25, 1942, he was arrested and imprisoned in Chartres then in Beaune-la-Rolande, in Loiret. Deported to Auschwitz, he died there a few weeks later. His children, who had fled, will be arrested in Nice and deported in 1944. No one will return. »
