Anti-Semitic Graffiti and Damage Reported on Memorial of Teen Who Died in Brooklyn – NBC New York

An improvised monument intended to honor life of a 15-year-old girl who passed away last monthafter it was hit by a school bus, it was vandalized and marked with anti-Semitic graffiti.

Antonina Zatulovska was found on January 17 after the driver hit her near Bedford Avenue and Avenue P near the Midwood neighborhood. Officers found the teen after responding to a call that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.

Councilwoman Inna Vernikov tweeted a photo Monday of broken candles at the memorial outside James Madison High School, where the 15-year-old attended. Along with the candles and various stuffed animals, she drew a swastika on the sidewalk.

“Today I was informed by a constituent that the makeshift memorial site was vandalized with a swastika and broken candles,” Vernikov tweeted. “Having that tragedy compounded by hateful bigotry is nothing short of cruelty.”

The councilwoman said she reported the incident to the NYPD.

A 55-year-old man was arrested the day of the incident and charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian and not exercising due care.
