Anti-Semitic cartoons in Aalst: “Do not publish Jewish clichés in the media”

Avoid using images of carnival floats with Jewish caricatures, three media professors specializing in anti-Semitism asked the media in a carte blanche published in De Morgen on Tuesday.

These images are not innocent and lead to anti-Jewish feelings, warns theology professor Didier Pollefeyt (KU Leuven). Academics point out the danger of these illustrations. “As researchers on anti-Semitism within Flemish universities, we must point out that the caricatures exhibited at Aalst (…) have been dangerous in the past”, argue Vivian Liska (UAntwerpen), Didier Pollefeyt (KU Leuven) and Klaas Smelik (UGent).

The three professors ask the national and international media to no longer use these images or at least to contextualize them with a correct historical interpretation.

“These anti-Semitic images are disseminated around the world via the press and social media,” said Smelik. “They are thus increasingly anchored in the imagination of people, whether or not accompanied by comments.”

Should this be seen as a call to censorship? Pollefeyt says no: “It doesn’t make a lot of sense to ban something like that. But it’s not easy to use such images. no matter what context they’re in. ” These images are not innocent and lead to anti-Jewish feelings, says Professor Pollefeyt.
