THE HAGUE – Edwin Wagensveld, an anti-Islam figure, has insulted the holy book Al-Qur’an in front of the Embassies of Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey and Denmark in The Hague, Netherlands, last Saturday.
The leader of PEGIDA, an Islamophobic group, took action by tearing and trampling on the Islamic holy book.
Apart from destroying many copies of the Koran outside foreign embassies, Wagensveld also hurled insults at the Islamic religion and Muslim people.
During the action in front of the Turkish Embassy, he stepped on pages of the Koran.
The Turkish government strongly condemns the defamation of the Koran by the PEGIDA frontman.
In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that Ankara condemned the spread of these “provocative attacks,” which were allowed to be carried out in European countries under the guise of freedom of expression.
“In response to this provocation, recognized by the UN as religious hatred and a violation of international law, the country where the attack occurred must now take effective action,” the ministry said, as quoted by Middle East MonitorMonday (25/9/2023).
Turkiye called on the Dutch authorities to take necessary action against the perpetrators and take action to prevent the recurrence of similar attacks.
Akif Cagatay Kilic, chief advisor to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, also condemned the desecration of the Koran in the Netherlands.
“Against this disgusting, provocative act, this country and its rulers must now take necessary action!” Kilic said.
