Tehran: The parents of a 23-year-old man sentenced to death over hijab protests in Iran have asked for the sentence to be spared. A week before the protest, a young man named Mehdi Mohammad Karami was sentenced to death. A video has been released of parents begging the authorities to spare their son from the death penalty.
The hijab movement has thrown the Iranian government into crisis. Amnesty International has warned that at least 26 people could be killed during the protests. After this, Karami’s parents came forward with a plea for her life.
Karate champion, Karimi has won several national championships. His parents have asked for the revocation of their son’s death sentence, while maintaining all respect for the judiciary. Karami is one of five sentenced to death for assaulting an Iranian military member during the protester’s death ceremony. Human rights organizations have accused Iran of using the death penalty as a weapon to repress and intimidate people who participated in the protests that erupted three months ago following the death in custody of Mahsa Amini.
