The protesters called for a boycott of French products, while the police prevented them from marching to the French embassy. More than 100,000 people took part, according to the organizers.
In the Islamic world, demonstrations have been taking place against France for some time. Angry Muslims in Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Palestinian areas, among others, accuse Macron of being Islamophobic. The French leader has spoken out strongly against Islamic extremism after the recent murder of teacher Samuel Paty. He also defended the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, which is very sensitive among Muslims.
French Embassy
On Monday, some 400 people also demonstrated at the French embassy in the Indonesian capital Jakarta against the way France deals with cartoons of the prophet Mohammed. The protesters waved posters calling French President Emmanuel Macron “an enemy of Muslims.”
“We condemn the insult of the Prophet Mohammed,” read a text, referring to caricatures of Mohammed republished in early September by the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo.
Criticism
Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Saturday condemned the recent deadly attacks by Islamists, including the beheading of a Parisian teacher who showed Mohammed cartoons in a lesson on freedom of speech, and the stabbing by a suspected Islamist who killed three people in a church in Nice. .
But Joko, who leads the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, also criticized Macron for his comments on Islam and French officials’ defense of the right to publish the offensive cartoons.
