Mexico City. The National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) reported that anti-drone weapons are being used to provide protection for elements that carry out reconnaissance and patrol tasks, mainly in Michoacán, “but not for military installations,” said General Luis Cresencio Sandoval.
In a morning press conference, he explained that “what we are looking for is to have the capacity that we did not have for the personnel who are carrying out reconnaissance, mainly in Michoacán, and to generate protection capacity for personnel, because there have been injuries, and we even have deaths.”
Regarding the capacity of organized crime groups to manufacture weapons, including with the use of 3D printers, he said that weapons spare parts have been seized, “but we have not seized any workshop where these are assembled. There have been seizures of some workshops where they are mainly looking to do refurbishment to perhaps keep their weapons operational,” but he indicated that no evidence has been found that they are manufacturing weapons.
Regarding the ability to armour the vehicles, known as monsters, he said that they are mainly used for fights between criminal groups, and not in confrontations with the authorities. He explained that the presence of foreigners in criminal cells has also been detected, mainly citizens of Guatemala, Colombia and the United States.
