Minister Hugo de Jonge told Sanquin’s head office on Thursday that he found a fine example of work from the blood bank and that the Dutch – after having had corona – donated plasma with antibodies. “Many thanks to everyone who donated. Now quickly to the next step: starting with this innovative treatment. ”
Medical specialists, together with a Sanquin working group, have examined the question of who should receive these ‘super ampoules’ – which contain a high concentration of antibodies. They want to protect people with a weakened immune system, such as patients who are in the middle of an oncological treatment process. Vulnerable elderly people often also have a weakened immune system. These groups are more susceptible to infection with the coronavirus and benefit most from preventive treatment with antibodies. The preventative should always be administered under the supervision of a treating physician.

A study into the preventive administration of antibodies to elderly people in nursing homes will also be launched shortly. The working group recommends testing this in nursing homes where the Covid-19 infection pressure is high. Minister De Jonge makes both funding and a stock of the medicine available for this. The first results are expected in the summer of 2021.

The expectation is that a patient will have to be treated with the antibodies every month, so that means that 4,000 bottles full of ‘panacea’ is not enough for everyone. Since donations are still being made by recovered corona patients, it is expected that another 4,000 doses will be available in January. Especially people who have recently recovered from a corona infection, their blood contains a lot of antibodies. ”
