RIYADH – Former professional heavyweight champion of the world Briton Anthony Joshua won his third fight this year.
The day before Christmas, he defeated the Swedish boxer Otto Wallin in Riyadh by technical knockout after the fifth round. In the fight, which was also watched by the star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo at the ring, there was no title involved.
After two defeats with the Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk for the championship titles in 2021 and 2022, Joshua did not find a defeater in matches with opponents of less famous names. But he denied that Saturday’s win meant he was back in the limelight.
“I respect Otto. I said throughout the preparation that I must not underestimate him because he deserves respect. But it is not a return. Just another day at work,” the 34-year-old British boxer was quoted by the Reuters agency. The Olympic champion from London has beaten Wallin twice in the past, even when they were amateurs.
New Zealander Joseph Parker caused a surprise in Riyadh, winning on points over the former American heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder. It was with him that Joshua was supposed to have another fight, which had been talked about for a long time.
“He lost. So what? He’ll be back. I’m sure everyone still wants to see that match.” said Joshua, who improved his record to 27 wins and three defeats. According to Eddie Hearn’s promoter, Joshua will first fight Croatian Filip Hrgovic for the vacant IBF belt.
