The Winton family was originally Jewish, but they didn’t care much about the faith and had Nicholas baptized. During a vacation in 1938, Winton decided to save as many children as possible. For each he had to find a family in the UK, get a bail of about £ 50 and a visa.

The first train left Prague on March 14, 1939 with twenty children. Later, the number of children began to rise, not only local but also children of Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria. The last children’s transport set out on August 2, 1939, and a total of 669 children were saved. Further attempts failed because of the outbreak of war.

Winton did not brag about his activities at all, and only after fifty years did the media become interested in him, and then several television programs were made.
