Anthony Fauci Reflects on U.S. COVID-19 Response: Missteps, Missed Opportunities and Major Problems

NEW YORK, April 26 (Xinhua) — Since Anthony Fauci retired late last year as director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, ending his role as America’s doctor during the COVID-19 public health emergency, he has reflected, in a series of new interviews, on the missteps and missed opportunities that have characterized the United States’ response to the pandemic , according to CNN information updated Wednesday.

“How did the United States, one of the wealthiest and most resourced nations on the planet, record more than 1.1 million deaths from COVID-19 in the space of three years, a taller record than most other countries?” asks CNN, quoting Fauci as saying that, overall, two major problems have stumbled the United States in its attempt to fight against COVID-19.

“The first is the political divide, which has led many conservatives to be wary of public health recommendations to get vaccinated and wear masks in public,” the US channel said. “The second major problem, as he explained, is the fragmentation of the American health care delivery system.”

“We didn’t fully appreciate the fact that we were dealing with a highly transmissible virus that was clearly spreading in unprecedented ways and that we didn’t know anything about. So it tricked us at first and misled us. about the need to wear masks, ensure good ventilation and prevent any social interaction,” Fauci said. END
