Anthony Colette: From High-Level Competitions to Dancing with the Stars

Anthony Colette, you have been a regular dancer at Dancing with the Stars since 2017. Was that a goal for you?

“It’s quite special because we’re not really looking for it. Me, it was not my goal. I was competing at a high level. The only time I went to Paris, for the semi-final of a competition, a headhunter saw me dancing and contacted me via Facebook for Dancing with the stars.

Has your life changed since joining the show?

“Yes, my life has changed. A month before my first Dance with the Stars season, I slept on a mattress on the floor in a small 20 m² apartment in Aubagne, near Marseille, which I could barely afford. It was a hassle. Then came Dancing with the Stars, I got a super salary and I was very happy. Afterwards, I had the opportunity to do comedy, to release other projects, to make music.

Can we live well just with the cachet of DALS?

”Yes, we can live well just with Dancing with the stars. We are not Kylian Mbappé but we are not going to complain. (smile)

Becoming a dancer has always been obvious to you?

“It was never obvious to me. I loved dancing but until I was 17-18, I never said to myself that I wanted to be a dancer. I started taking dance lessons watching Dancing with the Stars because it made me want to dance. But, I never said to myself that I was going to become a dancer for the show. At school I was good but I was not passionate. Nothing interested me. I passed the BAC and then I didn’t know what to do so I thought about what I liked to do. That’s when I turned to dance but without knowing where it was going to lead me.

How was it taken with you?

”At the beginning, my parents didn’t really understand because nobody was in that environment. It was a little hot, especially with my father. But, very quickly, they followed me. They supported me a lot financially and mentally. I’m lucky to have parents like that.”

Having been part of the DALS dancers is a real added value for a professional dancer?

”You have to distinguish the world of competition which is a microcosm of very high level dancers and Dancing with the stars which is television entertainment. The two don’t mix too well. Competitive dancers will often criticize Dancing with the Stars but many of them would still like to participate because they know that they will make a good living from it when we do not make a good living in the industry. professional dance. But, me, in no case do I regret my choice.”

Since your arrival on the show, you have been given a love story with your partners every year. How do you take it?

“At first, I liked it. I was 22 and single. They put me with dancers who weren’t too ugly and I was happy. I took advantage of it… Then, I got older and I especially have someone in my life. The stories continue but I managed to take a step back from it all. I’m not going to say that I like hearing them now, no. But, with my girlfriend, we laugh about it.”

Could this have caused discord within your own couple?

“No never. She is also part of the television industry. She trusts herself and me. It is important in any relationship and especially in our business because I am often surrounded by women.

With which partner did you have the best experience in DALS?

”My best experience remains my first season. For me, it was brand new. I was on the set I watched on TV when I was 15. My partner, Joy Esther was really cool and nice. She made me feel comfortable. I couldn’t ask for a better partner. If I had fallen with another partner that I have been able to meet since on the show, it could have been more complicated because there are characters sometimes… Anyway, in short, as I tell you, I would not have couldn’t have asked for better.”

A dancer’s career is usually very short. What is the age limit according to you?

”I don’t know what the age limit is but what I do know is that at the time, I trained 8 hours a day, including weekends. Today, I hardly train outside of Dancing with the Stars. I feel that my body is aging. I have a very bad shoulder. At some point, you will have to be careful if I want to stay in one piece!” (laughs)
