Antelope Canyon: when and how to visit it?

This canyon is made up of two separate gorges, the Upper Antelope Canyon, the upper section, and the Lower Antelope Canyon, the lower section. It was a young Navajo Indian who discovered the site in 1931. Since then, it can only be visited on guided excursions, partly because of the unexpected rains that can quickly flood it.

Navajo Indians, who own the place, offer the tours.

When to visit Antelope Canyon?

The months between April and September are the best to visit the canyon. It is necessary to privilege the time slots between 11am and 2pm, when the sun, at its highest, illuminates the interior of the canyon. The light must be vertical to penetrate it. After 2 p.m., the rock becomes dull, and the magic of the place disappears a little.

How to get to Antelope Canyon?

The two Antelope Canyon sites are located face to face, 8 km east of the town of Page in Arizona, on Highway 98, the road that comes from Monument Valley. The entrance to the Upper Canyon is just after mile 299 when coming from Page, and a little before the huge power plant. The entrance to the “Lower” is on Indian route 222 which intersects highway 98, a few hundred meters from the “Upper”.

Reservation is mandatory

For the “Upper”, it is practically impossible to make the excursion without reservation. If you plan to visit the canyon between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., be aware that you will need to book at least 6 months in advance, especially in high season. For the Lower Antelope Canyon, reservations are also strongly recommended. As it is a little less touristy, it is usually possible to buy a ticket once there. In the event of rain, the visit will be canceled and reimbursed by the service provider.

Visiter l’Upper Antelope Canyon

This is the busiest part, the largest and also the one that is easier to access. The canyon has a length of 200 meters and a width varying between 2 and 3 meters. You will walk on a terrain with no unevenness. We go back and forth, 400 meters in the canyon.

Explorer le Lower Antelope Canyon

This smaller area is less frequented. Indeed, the entry into the fault is more sporty being carried out by metal staircases set up by the Navajos. The canyon is very narrow in some places. If you are claustrophobic, the visit is to be avoided. With a length of 400 meters, the hike is one-way. The canyon is divided into several sections. You have to take stairs several times. Both flaws have a similar aesthetic quality.
