The Banyuwangi district of East Java in Indonesia has been selected to be part of the Smart Green ASEAN Cities (SGAC) development program by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF). The program encourages the implementation of environmentally-friendly cities in Southeast Asia and focuses on smart solutions through digitalisation and technology. Banyuwangi was chosen as a pilot project by the Environment and Forestry Ministry, while Banyumas, Central Java was also selected. The UNCDF team visited Banyuwangi in early March to collect data and discuss the scoping mission. The district received the Indonesia Green Awards in 2016 for its environmental commitment and policy.
