Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) sees May as the “month of decision” in the corona crisis. The larger opening steps on May 1, with the extensive withdrawal of the exit restrictions, also go hand in hand with “great attention from the health authorities”, the ministry said on Friday.
“Nobody in Europe has experience with this and individual countries in Asia have had great difficulties along the way,” Anschober emphasized. “If we can do this without a large increase in the number of diseases, this would be the decisive step back to everyday life. I therefore urge the entire population not to underestimate the virus.”

The number of Austrians currently suffering from the coronavirus fell to 1,862 people on Friday. According to the Ministry of Health (as of 9:30 a.m.), this was 99 fewer than the previous day. In a 24-hour comparison, the number of new cases with Covid-19 was minus five percent below the average of the past four days (minus 5.8 percent).
–
124 people are currently in intensive care units, four fewer than the previous day. Most of them can be found with 37 patients in Lower Austria’s hospitals, followed by Tyrol (27) and Vienna (22). A total of 472 Austrians are hospitalized. The Ministry of the Interior attested that 74 percent of the cases of infected had a “mild course” of an illness.
–
So far, 589 people across Austria have died of or with Covid 19 disease. Most of the fatalities were in Vienna, 131, followed by 130 in Styria, 105 in Tyrol and 92 in Lower Austria. 13,092 people have now recovered nationwide. According to the Ministry of Health’s website, 264,079 tests have been carried out so far.

“We are successful, but we have not yet won anything. Unfortunately, the crisis is far from over,” Anschober said in view of the “stable figures”. However, it was still important to adhere to the basic rules of the corona crisis, such as minimum distances and hygiene regulations, in the second phase of the gradual, secure return to everyday life.
–
Anschober saw this as a difficult challenge for everyone, he appealed to the Austrians: “Each and every one of us is now, to a very special extent, part of the solution! We all decide with our behavior about the return to everyday life, everyone and everyone now assumes personal responsibility . “
