Bird flu has been diagnosed at a laying hen farm in Renswoude. The 65,000 chickens on the company are being culled, the Ministry of Agriculture reports.

It is the first outbreak of bird flu in the Netherlands in just four months. The last time a company was cleared was in July, in Biddinghuizen, it appears a table on the ministry’s website.

At the beginning of this month, outgoing Agriculture Minister Adema decided to completely cancel the general cage requirement due to bird flu, because there had been no outbreaks since July and the number of infections among wild birds in both the Netherlands and Europe was small.

Obligation to keep shelter for the region

Due to the outbreak at the company in Renswoude, measures are now being introduced again. For example, there is an immediate obligation to keep cages for poultry farms in the same region.

There are two more poultry farms within a kilometer of the company. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) will extensively investigate these companies for bird flu.

The 31 companies within a radius of three kilometers around the infected company will also be monitored over the next ten days. And a transport ban applies immediately to the more than 200 poultry farms within a radius of ten kilometers.
