The new erotic center will be built in Amsterdam when it is located at the Municipal Executive on the Europaboulevard in South. The intention is for 100 sex workers from the Red Light District to move there to combat the nuisance of sex tourism in the city center.
In addition to the Europaboulevard, there are two other possible locations for the new erotic center, namely the Docklandsplot on the NDSM wharf in Noord and De Groene Zoom at the RAI. But the Europaboulevard is preferred by the city council.
The council will submit the choice to the Amsterdam city council early next year. Been speaking since 2018 council members about reducing nuisance in the Red Light District.
Not sustainable
According to Mayor Halsema, the situation in the red-light district is not sustainable. In addition to combating nuisance, the council’s aim is to improve the position of sex workers and combat crime.
The windows of the erotic center are only on the inside of the building, to prevent ‘viewing tourism’. All visitors enter through a secure entrance and must comply with the house rules.
Lots of resistance
Since the plans were announced, there has been a lot of resistance from residents, entrepreneurs and sex workers themselves. In October, more than a hundred demonstrators marched to the city hall in Amsterdam.
If a majority of the municipal council supports the council’s proposal, the plan will be further developed. According to the council, it will take about seven years before the erotic center is built.
