The AD is appealing against the court’s decision, which today banned the newspaper from publishing about the Khalid Kasem case. The newspaper does that via an emergency call.

The judge ruled that the newspaper may not publish a proposed publication about possible bribery by Kasem. According to the judge, the interests of the individuals involved outweigh the right to freedom of the press.

According to AD editor-in-chief Rennie Rijpma, the verdict represents “an unprecedented intervention in press freedom.”

The journalists’ union NVJ is also shocked. Particularly because the judgment contains nothing about the judge’s considerations, says general secretary Thomas Bruning.

“It is a very serious measure to ban journalists in advance from publishing about something, but it is not motivated in any way in this judgment.”
