The UN Special Rapporteur on adequate housing, Balakrishnan Rajagopal, will pay an official visit to the Netherlands from Monday. The rapporteur will, among other things, look at asylum seeker centers.

He “will conduct research into the availability of housing, its affordability and accessibility, homelessness and what measures the Netherlands is taking to ensure that the right to adequate housing applies to all population groups in the country,” says a message from the United Nations.

The rapporteur will visit The Hague, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Groningen. It has not been announced whether he will also visit the registration center in Ter Apel. The UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, calls the situation in the registration center for asylum seekers “downright worrying”.

The visit lasts until December 21. Rajagopal, an American, is a professor of law and development at the leading American university MIT. He will write a report on his visit to the Netherlands, which will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in March next year.
