Outgoing State Secretary Eric van der Burg for Asylum and Migration has temporarily resigned from his duties due to illness. He has suffered severe food poisoning, Prime Minister Rutte reports.
Van der Burg (VVD) became unwell on Sunday during a working visit to Aruba and was admitted to hospital. He subsequently canceled visits to Curaçao and Bonaire.
Van der Burg has now been released from hospital. He will need a few more weeks to recover, Rutte says.
Van der Maat
Due to the weight of his portfolio, Van der Burg will be replaced until his recovery by the current State Secretary for Defense, his party colleague Christophe van der Maat. He will therefore be honorably discharged from Defense. His work there is overseen by Minister Kajsa Ollongren (D66).
Van der Maat will be sworn in as State Secretary for Justice and Security by King Willem-Alexander on Monday.
