Protesters pelted police with stones and other projectiles in Barcelona during a second night and night of disturbances in Spain’s second-largest city. In the northern Spanish city of Logroño, about 150 people attacked the police with stones, set fire to containers and looted shops, police reported. Riot police were called to quell disturbances in Haro, in the wine-growing region of La Rioja.
Sánchez tweeted: “Only from responsibility, unity and sacrifice will we be able to defeat the pandemic that is devastating all countries. Violent and irrational behavior by minority groups is unbearable. It’s not the way. ”
Stones, fires and looting
On Friday, about 50 protesters attacked the police in Barcelona with stones, set fire to dumpsters and looted shops. Fourteen people were arrested and thirty people were injured.
Previously, local police said about 1,500 hotel and restaurant workers took part in a peaceful demonstration against restrictions. They fear losing their jobs. All bars and restaurants will be closed in Spain’s Catalonia, including Barcelona, until November 13.
State of emergency
Similar disturbances also occurred in the cities of Burgos, Vitoria, Santander, Valencia and Zaragoza on Friday. Spain, one of the countries most affected by Covid-19, has imposed a state of emergency until early May next year. Like other European countries, Spain has resorted to increasingly drastic measures to curb the number of infections, although the restrictions are less strict than in Germany or France. The country has 36,000 corona deaths.
