The brutal murder of a 32-year-old woman – another victim in Bulgaria, 11 since the beginning of the year. This time she sought help, but her story ends with a bullet to the head.
Nadezhda Stoycheva from “Animus” explained to bTV that the risk for Christina was very high and it was very seriously recommended that she hide.
“However, the woman turned to us with great disbelief and said that she was afraid for her life. She was advised to contact the police. If there had been a complaint, there would certainly have been a law enforcement response. The perpetrator had a criminal past and it would have been seen,” Stoycheva said.
She explained that Christina had a meeting with psychologists and was in the process of breaking up with Kaloyan, who in the last 6 months had started threatening her. The man crossed her car with his car, and the threats were not direct.
“It was psychological harassment. He told her: ‘When you come home, you will find corpses’ and similar phrases. There was no physical violence, but the harassment was very serious,” Stoicheva explained.
She added that there was an agreement that the woman would not always travel with an escort. On the day of the murder, for unclear reasons, she left alone.
Nadezhda Stoycheva also described the profile of the victim, who was offered to hide and completely change her lifestyle.
“She has two higher educations, she knew two languages, a beautiful, strong woman. She thought she could organize her escape herself,” explained the expert.
Stoycheva added that for “Animus” this is a very difficult moment, because for the first time they lose a person who turned to them. She firmly believes that the woman could have been saved, but she should have applied.
“If that had happened, we would have involved lawyers for restraining orders. We also have criminal lawyers with whom we could have helped the police to act immediately, however, Kaloyan has a criminal past,” Stoycheva added.
She stated that they have 20 people a week who approach them about domestic violence and the situation is really serious. Stoycheva believes that legislative changes are needed.
