According to the UK Guardian on the 15th (local time), a research team at the University of Edinburgh released a report that discovered a coronavirus strain named’B1525′ through genome sequencing. According to the report, this strain has been found in 10 countries, including Denmark, the United States and Australia, and 32 cases have been reported in the United Kingdom. The first discovery dates back to the UK and Nigeria last December.

According to the Edinburgh researchers, the’B1525′ variant discovered this time is similar in genome to the’B117′ called the’British variant corona’ that we have known so far. The UK government has published a study that B117 is more contagious and more fatal than the general novel coronavirus.

In the’B1525′ variant, the’E484K’ mutation was confirmed in the spike protein. This mutation appeared in mutant viruses that appeared in South Africa and Brazil, and plays an important role in helping the virus penetrate into cells from outside. Studies have shown that this mutation allows the virus to better evade neutralizing antibodies produced by the body.

“It is unclear whether the mutation increases coronavirus infectivity or makes the infected more painful,” said Dr Simon Clark, associate professor of cellular microbiology at the University of Reading in the UK. It is known that” he said.

“It is not yet known how high the transmission power of this strain will be,” Clark said. “If the virus is successful, there is a possibility that the immunity obtained from vaccines or infections will also be weakened.”

The continued emergence of mutant viruses has ignited red flags in health care around the world. This is because the developed vaccine may be useless. “We need to quickly fix and apply the vaccine we developed,” said Professor Jonathan Stoye of the Francis-Clark Institute.

However, it is positively evaluated that the same mutation pattern as the’E484K’ spike protein mutation appears among mutant viruses. This is because once the vaccine is modified, all mutations can be applied to the virus.
