A record temperature of 18.8 degrees for January 3 was recorded in Targovishte.

“Two hot days in a row with temperatures atypical for January are reported by meteorologists of the region. Yesterday the maximum temperature was 16.7 degrees,” said the head of the Meteorological Observatory, Krasimira Stoicheva.

Institute data indicate that the absolute minimum in January was recorded in 2010. Then in Targovishte the thermometers measured minus 23.2 degrees on 26 January. The hottest was in 2014, when 20.6 degrees was measured on January 20.

The coldest January 3 was in 1954, when minus 13.5 degrees was recorded. And the hottest, to date, when the record was bettered, was in 1984. Also since 1984 it was the all-time high – with 21 degrees measured on January 2nd.

“Archival documents show that after these two consecutive days in 1984, a cold front invaded and the weather changed sharply,” Stoycheva noted.
