With more than 100 participants, a conference on mastology was held at the Hotel La Castellana, where the challenges and advances in the fight against breast cancer in the country were addressed. Organized by the Uruguayan Society of Mastology and Comepa, the event was part of a series of activities at the national level. In Uruguay, significant progress has been made in the early diagnosis of this disease, with 70 to 80% of cases detected in early stages thanks to mammography, although mortality remains a challenge. In figures that are similar to those of the developed world, in our national territory some 800 women – out of around 2,000 cases that occur each year – die annually due to breast cancer, a figure that worries health professionals. Oncologist Guianeya Santander, president of the Uruguayan Society of Mastology, head of the Oncology Service at the Military Hospital of Montevideo and one of the organizers of this event in the city, stressed the importance of knowing the national reality regarding incidence and mortality of breast cancer. “Uruguay has similar characteristics to developed countries in terms of incidence, but mortality rates are still alarmingly high,” she told EL TELEGRAFO. Santander emphasized the need for a multidisciplinary approach and the implementation of mastology units throughout the country. “It is essential to have teams that can respond with the best treatments and in the right time, ensuring access to rehabilitation and follow-up for breast cancer survivors,” she explained.
