Another stabbing in Zaandam a few hours after the knife ban came into effect | Inland

The victim received medical treatment. The boy parked his moped at a flat, brought the meal inside, and when he got back discovered that the delivery food had been stolen. Witnesses pointed in the direction of three boys who had run away. The meal deliverer went after it to get redress. There was an argument in which he was beaten and also stabbed with something. The police went over, ran into the three and picked them up.

Part of the street was blocked in connection with the police investigation. As far as known, no one has been arrested yet.

In an attempt to curb the number of stabbing incidents among very young teenagers, the municipality of Zaandam introduced a total knife ban from Friday. Anyone carrying a ‘dangerous object’ can expect a fine of 2,500 euros.

“Weapons and violence must leave our municipality,” said Mayor Jan Hamming. “In recent years there have been too many incidents of violence with sometimes tragic consequences. I want to do everything I can to reduce this.

Possession and use of weapons is a major problem in Zaanstad. In 2017, 138 incidents were registered with a weapon that required the police to intervene. In 2019 this already increased to 171. This year, despite the corona crisis, there have already been 142 incidents, spread throughout the municipality.
