Another six people from the Tour of the United Arab Emirates tested positive for the corona virus on Tuesday. They came in contact with the two people who were previously infected. The course was stopped after five stages following those infections.
The news of the six new corona cases was confirmed by the Ministry of Health of the United Arab Emirates, which says it concerns two Russians, two Italians, a German and a Colombian.
As with the previous two cases, it is not known whether it concerns riders or staff members. Four quarantine teams are currently in a hotel in the United Arab Emirates: UAE Team Emirates, which voluntarily locked itself in, Cofidis, Groupama-FDJ and Gazprom.
“The people are closely monitored, their condition is stable. They all receive the best care. The people who have been tested negative for the corona virus have been allowed to leave the hotel,” said the Ministry of Health.
Organization canceled the last two stages
The organization of the Tour of the United Arab Emirates canceled the last two stages on Thursday due to the corona virus outbreak. Since then, all riders had to stay in their hotel, awaiting the outcome of the tests that were carried out on them.
It appeared that nobody else had been infected, which meant that most teams, including Jumbo-Visma, received the green light on Sunday to leave the hotel and fly back to their own country.
Adam Yates was named the winner of the Tour of the United Arab Emirates. Mitchelton-SCOTT’s Englishman took the lead in the general classification on Thursday. Dylan Groenewegen of Jumbo-Visma won the fourth stage after a mass sprint.
