Two officials working at the South Korean embassy in China in Beijing, China, were recently found to be assaulting administrative staff at the same embassy. Another unpleasant incident occurred at the diplomatic mission abroad, where it was pointed out that it was in the blind spot of surveillance due to sexual harassment.

On the 9th, according to the administrative union of overseas diplomatic missions under the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (Korean Federation of Trade Unions), a Korean administrative employee A, who works at the Korean Embassy in China in Beijing, was assaulted by Korean officials B and C. Mr. B and Mr. C belong to the National Assembly and the National Intelligence Service, respectively, and are working at the weekly embassy together with Mr. A.

According to the union side, at around 11 pm on the 4th, A, while drinking with an acquaintance at a bar, joined the embassy’s colleagues B and C and had a conversation. Mr. A was beaten while protesting against Mr. B’s rude speech. It is said that Mr. B struck Mr. A’s head with a wine bottle, and Mr. C pushed Mr. A down and hit him in the face with his fist.

In this case, Mr. A was treated at a local hospital and is known to be in a state of great mental shock, and Mr. A reported the case to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Most of the administrative staff at overseas diplomatic missions, such as Mr. A, are those who perform administrative tasks such as issuing visas and interpreting and translating. Some of these have formed unions under the Korean Federation of Trade Unions to protect their rights and interests. Currently, more than 700 administrative staff from 180 countries are affiliated with the union.

As seen in this case, the union is claiming that the administrative staff of overseas diplomatic missions are suffering from constant “cheap problems” such as diplomats.

They demanded criminal penalties for the perpetrators of this incident, and said, “The government should officially disclose its promise to prevent recurrence of intimidation and violent acts as well as sufficient compensation for victims.”
