Another Round of Possible Severe Storms Coming to New York Area – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK – Warmer and wetter: That’s what’s on the menu this Thursday as another round of potentially severe storms approaches.

Check the latest weather alerts here.

The storm is expected to move into the tri-state area Thursday afternoon and into the evening, this time targeting areas south of New York City.

After isolated showers passed overnight into Thursday, the threat of severe weather re-emerges in the late afternoon. Storms seem to arrive in the area starting at 4:00 p.m. and will last until 11:00 p.m.

Severe weather risk extends into central New Jersey, including Middlesex, Monmouth and Somerset counties. As of now, it looks like storms are most likely to impact the Philadelphia area and surrounding counties, but some intense ones could spread farther north.

The storms seem to bring the threat of destructive winds, flooding, lightning, hail and even the possibility of tornadoes, although the latter two could only emerge in southern New Jersey.

Damaging straight-line winds appear to be the primary threat as the air remains unsettled, with isolated flash flooding a secondary threat. Hail may be seen in some areas of Ocean County.

The New York City area doesn’t appear to be in line for any severe weather, though it could still see some persistent showers or isolated thunderstorms through Thursday night. By the time the storms reach the area, they will have weakened to the point of not posing much of a threat, other than possibly messing up outdoor plans.

The cause of the storms? The high pressure ridge that caused Tuesday’s brutal heat has moved south, allowing a couple of disturbances to traverse the region from west to east over the next few days.

Temperatures are likely to stay in the 70s to 80s from Thursday through the weekend. After the chance of thunderstorms arrives on Thursday, the humidity will drop, so Friday afternoon should be pleasant and the weekend will appear clear with mostly sunny or partly cloudy skies. High pressure returns, bringing calm and beautiful conditions for the weekend with high and low humidity levels near or slightly above average.

The next chance for showers and thunderstorms after that won’t come until Wednesday and Thursday of next week, though temperatures will still be comfortable in the 70s to 80s.
