Another property is being renovated in the historic village center of Dietikon

Old butcher’s shop as the next piece of the puzzle: upgrading of the Krone area continues

The old butcher’s shop on Kronenplatz is to be renovated and slightly converted. The Dietikon city council has approved a project loan. This means that almost all of the plans in the historic village center are now known.

The Dietikan city council is making further progress with its Krone properties in the historic village center: He wants to flesh out the plans for the renovation and conversion of the former butcher’s shop at Kronenplatz 8. He said he approved a loan of 192,600 francs for the project planning.

The building, built in 1688 and used for centuries as a butcher’s shop with an apartment above, is in poor condition. As part of the renovation, two apartments will be created on the upper floors, as city architect Peter Baumgartner explains. There are no plans yet for the ground floor; However, it should be used for commercial purposes.

Preserving history but allowing for modern use

The contract for the overall renovation of the old butcher’s shop went to the Helen Wyss & Dario Wohler consortium from Zurich as part of a planner election process. This suggested building two two-story, two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half room apartments on the first floor and the attic. Both apartments have access to the roof terrace on the roof terrace, says Baumgartner. However, this is only a basis for discussion for further planning,

According to the current schedule, the execution loan should be available in autumn 2025. No concrete information is yet available about the costs. Construction work could start in 2026 and the building could be occupied in 2027.

The old butcher’s shop should be preserved “as a building block of the historic village center of Dietikon and contribute to its overall effect,” says Baumgartner. But at the same time it should also enable modern use.

Gradual renovation, upgrading and revitalization

The city council plans to do the same for the entire Krone area. He wants to renovate, upgrade and revitalize the historic village center of Dietikon, as he has stated on various occasions in recent years. He has already taken several steps towards this. The Tavern zur Krone, which the city took over in 2005, was reopened in 2010 after extensive exterior and interior renovation. In 2014, the city sold the “Old Bear” to Markus Ehrat, who then converted it – in 2016, the tenants moved into the six new apartments.

The work on the old building authority at lower Reppischstrasse 14 was recently completed: In the former school and community center from 1778, two apartments were built on the upper floors, which are rented or reserved. The studio, which covers the entire ground floor, is advertised for rent.

Right next door at Kronenplatz 11, the hammering is still going on – but there are signs of an end there too. The tithe barn, built around 1600 with its characteristic large gate, to which the population once brought their donations for the Wettingen monastery and which has been empty in recent years, will become a cultural center and event location. The hall on the upper floor, which can accommodate around 120 people, is expected to be available for rent from March 2025.

The space between the buildings will also be redesigned

The next piece of the puzzle in the upgrading of the village center is the building at Kronenplatz 10 that is in need of renovation. The former wash house of the Taverne zur Krone, which was converted into a residential building in 1924/25 and is set back slightly behind the old butcher’s shop, is expected to be repaired and slightly converted next year. The project includes a two and a half room apartment on the ground floor and a three and a half room apartment on the upper floor.

The renovation of the old butcher shop could follow a year later. According to the current schedule, the outdoor space in the historic village center will also be redesigned from 2026. The project presented in July, which emerged as the winner of a competition, includes, among other things, a fountain and a pergola on the paved tithe garden.

Concrete plans are only missing for one building

The city of Dietikon does not yet have any concrete plans for the old wash house next to the renovated old building authority.

With the plans for the old butcher’s shop becoming more concrete, only one historical property remains in the city’s possession, for which there are still no concrete ideas for further development: the old washing and slaughterhouse at lower Reppischstrasse 12a.

According to the building construction department, this building from the 18th century must also be renovated in the coming years so that its historical substance can be preserved.

City architect Baumgartner says it is therefore being examined as to how it could be used in the future. In order to enliven the Krone area, the conceptual considerations for all ground floor uses of city-owned properties were, for example, in the direction of a small event venue with a bar or a creperie. Ateliers or offerings such as a flower shop are also conceivable. However, these clarifications are still at the very beginning.
