On the 5th, the National Police Agency issued an apology and said, “I would like to express my deep consolation and apology to the person who requested the reconsideration of the murder case along the Nakdong River and his family.”
The first criminal division of the Busan High Court (presiding judge Byeong-soo Kwak) was acquitted of the charges of robbery and murder in a trial for retrial filed by Choi In-cheol Jang Dong-ik, who served as a suspect in the case the day before. The judge said, “Innocent is recognized when the police consistently stated that they were arrested illegally without a warrant and’he was subjected to harsh acts such as water torture in the course of an investigation’.”
In the case of the Nakdong Riverside Murder, a woman was raped after kidnapping a man and woman in a car parked along the Nakdong River in Eomgung-dong, Sasang-gu, Busan, and injured a man in January 1990. Choi and others were arrested by the police for another case in 1991, and then confessed to the crime in this case and handed over to trial. They claimed innocence in the court saying that it was a false confession following torture by the police, but in 1993 the Supreme Court sentenced them to life imprisonment. The National Police Agency said, “I am very embarrassed for not following the legal procedures during the investigation process at the time,” and said, “I will try to prevent unfair victims from coming out again.” Reporter Ji Min-gu [email protected]Go to reporter page>
