The city of Geneva, as coordinator, said the organizers of the action were concerned about the weekly increase in the number of people in need due to the coronavirus crisis. Individuals in the Les Vernets ice rink could have been in line for up to six hours for a lunch bag.

Municipal services, university clinics, associations and non-governmental organizations as well as 80 volunteers contributed to the solidarity campaign. On Saturday, 662 people were still in need. Around 7,700 people were supported during the week by receiving a voucher worth between CHF 50 and CHF 150 depending on the size of the family.

Rice, sugar and oil
The organizers continued to honor the solidarity of the donors. Around 800 private individuals deposited the packages on Friday. The “Partage” organization, which distributes food to the poor, also provided around eight tons of pasta, rice, oil, sugar, preserves and hygiene products.

Oats, cocoa and coffee were also dispensed in the pockets. Local producers also controlled four tons of fresh products in separate packages.

Queue of over a kilometer
Last weekend, images of the fundraiser in Geneva made headlines. There was a queue of over a kilometer in length. Several thousand people waited for hours for a meal package.

Among those affected were Sans Papiers, who can no longer work as cleaners or in restaurants or hotels due to the coronavirus pandemic. (SDA / bra)
