Henstedt-Ulzburg. The last few years have shown that the location of Henstedt-Ulzburg is attractive for large logistics companies. The settlements of Netto with the main warehouse on Rudolf-Diesel-Straße and the central Rewe location even more to the north were nearby only a few years ago and caused a wide debate in the development phase up to the opening. Now – we hear from informed circles – another large logistics company wants to move to Henstedt-Ulzburg. The SPD parliamentary group first raised the issue for internal debate within politics.

The company Netto Marken-Discounter opened its main warehouse in 2018. It is 41,000 square meters in size, 5,000 items in countless numbers are stored there and come from Henstedt-Ulzburg every day to the 160 branches across northern Germany. 3,000 pallets full of goods leave the logistics center every day and are transferred to the branches to receive goods.
Rewe has invested 350 million euros
In the autumn of 2022, the company Rewe followed the same with the opening of the northern central location, which was built for 350 million euros. The Kiel and Norderstedt locations were combined in the new logistics and administration center, and approximately 1,000 employees changed their workplace. Rewe North’s head office was built on 250,000 square metres, the equivalent of 36 football pitches. If you walk completely around the building, you will have covered 1.3 kilometers. Around 30,000 luggage spaces are available in the storage area.

There were long discussions, especially about the truck traffic generated by the logistics companies. In an urban development agreement with Rewe, the city of Henstedt-Ulzburg was able to rule that trucks were only allowed to drive through the city in special cases – when the highway was closed. After years of debate, politicians agreed that more companies that would bring a lot of traffic were not wanted.
SPD Henstedt-Ulzburg will see new income with the settlement
And now maybe another logistician? The SPD sees the benefits of settlement. “We have a structural deficit in the budget, and like many cities, we just don’t have the money to be able to provide all the mandatory and voluntary services as before or as was expected,” said the leader of the parliamentary group Patrizia Giuffrida when asked by our newspaper. The Social Democrats are concerned about the budget of the town of Henstedt-Ulzburg. “We have the deficit currently more than eight million, although we still have enough question marks in our budget because, for example, we do not yet know the costs to introduce and maintain the open event throughout the day it also does not indicate how much the state will support the costs incurred,” explained Giuffrida.
There are a number of changes to counter this, and “unlike other organisations, we see the need for action not only in administrative personnel costs, but we would like our income increase in the long run. ” And one way to increase revenue without burdening citizens is through new commercial developments.
Areas that may not belong to the city
This is confirmed by Sebastian Döll, the community’s economic development officer. “Arrangements are important to ensure the performance of Henstedt-Ulzburg,” he said in the planning committee. “We are convinced that we can only position ourselves for the future with a new direction, including when it comes to commercial arrangements. Otherwise we will have to cut voluntary services and we will also have to reassess or even cancel investment measures,” explained Patrizia Giuffrida.

The space problem remains. Henstedt-Ulzburg currently has no suitable location. However, there are areas that could be designated as possible commercial areas in the Schleswig-Holstein state regional planning for Henstedt-Ulzburg. These are privately owned agricultural areas south of the Heideweg. “Negotiations between the municipality and the owner regarding the purchase have not been successful so far,” said Dr. Ulrike Riemenschneider (SPD) in the planning committee. The SPD suggested that company representatives should be consulted to to find out their views.
“The project is not new for us,” explained Jens Iversen (BFB). This was already discussed a year ago. “And maybe it will end like it did last time: at this time, no,” said the leader of the BFB parliamentary group, looking to the future. Michael Meschede (CDU) said: “We must be clear about the possible consequences of the settlement.
What next? Despite the concerns, the representatives of the company and the planning office should now be invited to a meeting of the planning committee. This is confirmed by committee member Folker Brocks (CDU). You could then present the plans.
