On Sunday, Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported that a military adviser to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards had died of his wounds “after an Israeli air attack” near the Syrian capital.
Israel has been carrying out attacks for years against what it says are targets linked to Iran in Syria, where Tehran’s influence has been growing since it began supporting the regime’s president, Bashar al-Assad, in the civil war that began in 2011.
Iran says its officers are playing an advisory role in Syria at the invitation of Damascus. Dozens of members of the Revolutionary Guards, including senior officers, have been killed in Syria during the war.
“Miqdad Miqdani was injured during the Zionist attack at dawn on Friday and was martyred,” the agency said.
The Friday air strike, the sixth attack by Israel in Syria last March, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, also killed Milad Haidari, another military advisor and officer in the Revolutionary Guards.
The Revolutionary Guards vowed to respond to the attack, which Israel launched on Friday, according to Reuters.
