As VG wrote earlier this week, it is expected that next week a so-called “Grand Jury” will be held to assess a possible indictment against Trump, for attempting to manipulate the election results in the state of Georgia after the last presidential election.

Several American media have now reported that there will be such a meeting, early next week. Among other things Washington Post, CNNand New York Times writes that a grand jury will be summoned.

It has not been confirmed by the state attorney general or police in Atlanta, Georgia’s state capital, but two different subpoenaed witnesses have come forward and confirmed that they have been asked to appear before the grand jury on Tuesday.

The local newspaper The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which has been following the case very closely, reports that they believe the court hearing starts as early as Mondayand that a decision on a possible indictment against Trump could be ready as early as Wednesday night, Norwegian time.

The Georgia case has been investigated for two and a half years, and has already been through several legal hearings.

It is about Trump trying in several different ways to have the election results changed in 2020, so that he could win the presidential election.

Trump claimed at the time that it was really him, and not President Joe Biden, who had won.

The claim has been refuted a number of times, and several of Trump’s close associates from that time have admitted that the president was lying.

State Attorney Fani Willis, who is leading the investigation against Trump in Georgia, has indicated that close to 20 people could be charged in the wake of an indictment against the former president, which then applies to Trump’s close advisers and lawyers.

This is the most important point in the Georgia case:

When it became clear that Trump had lost the 2020 election in the typically Republican state, he called Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

“You have to find 11,780” votes, Trump demanded. This is how he wanted to change the result in the important state in his favour.

Raffensperger refused, and came out with an audio recording of the conversation. He has already given several legal statements, and will probably testify against Trump.

The ex-president now says the phone calls he made to influence the outcome were “perfect”. Trump believes the charges against him are politically motivated because the Democrats fear he will win the election in 2024.

There are fears that an indictment in Georgia could lead to violent riots in support of Trump. Security fences have already been set up around the courthouse in the state capital, Atlanta.

At 23:10 Norwegian time, Trump has not yet commented on the latest development, but has previously said that he considers it absolutely certain that he will be prosecuted for “political reasons”.

In addition to the possible indictment in Georgia, Trump has already been indicted in three cases in the past four months:

Confused by the indictments against Trump? See VGTV’s super simple explanation in one minute:

If Trump is successful in being re-elected as president, he will have the opportunity to try to pardon himself in the federal cases, but he does not have that opportunity in the cases at the state level.

PS: The indictments against Trump do not appear to make him less popular among Republican voters. On the contrary: He clearly leads polls in the nomination battle to become the Republican presidential candidate.
