Four people were injured in a high school shooting in Texas on Wednesday, when a student opened fire following a brawl with another student before surrendering to police hours after the incident, said local police.
Four victims
Three people were taken to hospital, two of them with gunshot wounds, Kevin Kolbye, deputy police chief of Arlington, the city where the incidents took place, told a press conference. He did not specify the severity of these injuries. The fourth, a pregnant woman, was treated on site for minor injuries.
Three of the victims are students and the fourth is older, he added, without being able to say if it was a teacher or a member of the staff of the high school of Timberview, which on Wednesday welcomed 1,700 students in this city located between Dallas. and Fort Worth, in North Texas.
The author of the shots is a student
The police were notified at around 9.15 am (4.15 pm HB) of shots fired on the first floor of the establishment. Several units surrendered, but the gunman, Timothy George Simpkins, an 18-year-old student, had already fled in his car. The young man contacted a lawyer and finally went to the police, Kevin Kolbye said during a press briefing in the afternoon.
He was being questioned by Arlington Police investigators and should be charged with assault with a weapon, police said. A Colt 45 pistol, which may have been the weapon used, was found on a street in Grand Prairie, a neighboring municipality of Arlington, she said.
According to Mr. Kolbye, the shooting was the result of a brawl between students in a classroom. “We believe there was a fight between the student and another individual. A weapon was used, ”he said. “It was not a random act of violence,” he added.
The high school was placed in confinement and the students sealed themselves in the classes while the police carried out “methodical searches” to find the author of the shots. The students were then evacuated by bus to a meeting place with their families.
School shootings have been a plague in American society since the Columbine, Colo., Massacre in April 1999. These shootings are typically reported by local media, but seldom make national media headlines. Only a bloodbath, as in a high school in Parkland, Florida in February 2018, which killed 17 people, is now causing a shock wave.
