Pedro Pablo Pichardo is the new European indoor track champion in triple jump.
The 27-year-old Cuban jumper from Portugal gave Portugal the second gold medal in the competition, after Auriol Dongmo’s victory in the weightlifting event on Friday.
Pichardo soon got 17.30 meters in the first attempt, a mark that no other competitor threatened during the contest and that the Portuguese could not improve.
In the second test he jumped 17.09 meters and was followed by a null. Then he made a fourth attempt at 17.06 meters. He dismissed the fifth jump and in the last attempt reached 17.12 meters.
Alexis Copello, from Azerbaijan, and Max Heb (Germany) completed the podium, with jumps of 17.04 and 17.01 meters, respectively. This means that the four best jumps in the contest belonged to the Portuguese.
Pedro Pablo Pichardo is the second Portuguese European male indoor track champion in the triple jump, after Nélson Évora, who won gold in 2015 and 2017.
