Another emergency order in Utrecht’s Kanaleneiland district, also restless in Rotterdam | NOW

For a part of the Kanaleneiland district in Utrecht, another emergency order was issued on Tuesday evening because of young people who cause disturbances. At least five people have been arrested, according to a police spokesman.

Among other things, someone was arrested who set fire to a police scooter under the Marnix Bridge earlier in the evening. People were also arrested for violating the emergency order or not being able to identify them.

It is the fifth evening in a row that large groups of young people are causing unrest in parts of Utrecht. The police suspect that these are the same young people as previous days.

The unrest started around 9 p.m., when groups of young people gathered in the Ondiep neighborhood. Among other things, fireworks were set off. The emergency order was issued around 10 p.m. for the area around the Rijnbaan. The situation calms down around midnight, but the police remain present to prevent further disturbances and destruction.

It has been restless for days in various Utrecht neighborhoods. For the past five days, every night arrests were made among young people who wanted to riot. Fireworks and stones were thrown at the police. One cop hit on Saturday slightly injured. More than half of the detainees did not come from the neighborhood.

Acting Mayor Peter den Oudsten decided to return from vacation early because of the unrest in his city.

Also in Rotterdam restless due to unrest

In Rotterdam-Feijenoord, it was also restless on Tuesday evening because of groups of young people who sought confrontation with the police, reports Rijnmond. Several scooters were set on fire.

Shortly after midnight, the police regained control of the neighborhood. Three minors were arrested.
