Floods are not uncommon during the rainy season, but this year there is much more rain than usual. At the same time, the provinces that have been hit hard by the severe weather are struggling with infections from the delta variant of the corona virus.
Mudslides in Japan
Heavy showers also fell in western Japan. Four people were swept away by mudslides caused by torrential rain. One of them was taken to hospital by rescuers, another was killed. Two people are still being sought.
According to meteorologists, nearly 500 millimeters of rain has fallen around the city of Nagasaki in the past 48 hours, more than the average for the month of August. More downpours are expected in the coming days.
